Christian-believing enslaved people were forced deep into the woods under the cover of night, to practice their faith. By fire light they sang, cried out, danced and prayed melding African tradition with Christian worship. These clandestine meetings drew a hard line in the sand between the slave masters' manipulated oppressive theology and the resistant, empowering Christianity from which the enslaved drew courage, strength, and hope. These gatherings were the genesis of a rebellious and uplifting faith that spurred the Black Christian church.
These Gatherings were called Hush Harbors.
Black Christians are again grappling with a crisis of faith. We are separating true Christianity from white nationalism. We are learning how to heal from decades of silencing. We are elevating rest, recharge, and personal peace to their rightful place. We are learning from and educating our brothers and sisters in the way of pure, undefiled faith. We are uniting under a banner of love. Through The Hush Harbor Series we are amplifying voices that echo the zeal of our ancestors. We are cutting a familiar path to freedom and fanning the flame of Spirit-led revelation.
